Recently, I saw this phrase for the first time. It’s a play-off of “Sunday Scaries” where you get sad that the weekend is over and start prepping for the week ahead. Similarly, August Scaries means that you fall into an end-of-summer slump and start getting into a routine with a new school year ahead.
This is arguably the first year that the month of August has not brought any massive new changes to my life. Obviously, growing up August always holds the start of school or college. In the first year of our marriage (we got married on July 28, 2018), we returned from our honeymoon and Matt moved into our house. I had started a job in June that I hated. I was offered a new job while we were on our honeymoon, so when we returned, I quit the first job and started a new one. That is definitely a lot of change in one month. Not to mention that we were also learning how to be a married couple.
The next August, Matt started law school, and once again our lives were on a school year calendar. The August after Matt’s law school graduation in 2022, we went on a trip to Switzerland, Matt started his new career and job, and I found out that I was pregnant. Again, a whole lot of change!
This year definitely has held its fair share of change, but most of it happened in July and earlier. This August, there are no August Scaries! I know that our life will operate on a school calendar again soon, but this month I am just soaking in the routine that is already established. I am so grateful for all the changes that have led us here. The start of August is a happy one because it signals that all my favorite things are coming. Cooler weather is on its way (even if cooler means temps in the 80s instead of the 90s), college football is coming, and pumpkins will start making their way onto front porches and in our foods. The last few months of the year are my favorites and August is just the beginning!
